What the NMLS says about Licensing Requirements
The NMLS has created a page where they centralize all of their continuing education requirements, so if you want to go straight to the source of the rules, you can do so here.
But here is a simple formula that works for every state except New Jersey: Take the 8-hour Federal Continuing Education class and then check if your state(s) require state-specific courses. Then, of course, complete those. Here's a map detailing which states have their own additional requirements:
New Jersey is the one exception, where MLOs need to take the 8 hour Federal Class, the NJ state-specific class, and then two more state CE hours.
How to calculate how many hours of mortgage CE you need
So, The first thing you need to do is remember which states you have licenses in and want to renew. Some of them require state specific CE and others just require the federal CE. Every single state requires a minimum of 8 hours of education, 7 of which is required to be the federal class.
To figure out if your state has state specific requirements, we have simplified the NMLS chart for you below. If your state does not appear on the chart, you can just take the 8 hour to complete that state’s requirements. What if you are licensed in multiple states? So if you were licensed in California, Texas, Georgia, and New York, you would look at the chart, and see that only California, Georgia, and New York have State Specific CE hours. So you would take your Federal class, and the 1 hour GA, 1 Hour CA, and 3 Hour NY Class.
